Are you going to stop using High Fructose Corn Syrup?
Although we have significantly reduced our use of the ingredient in recent years, we do use High Fructose corn syrup when it is right for the recipe, mostly to help deliver a smoother texture than other sugars can provide, or to keep the cost of a product affordable. High fructose corn syrup is labelled glucose-fructose in Canada and contains the same number of calories as table sugar. It has been widely used in the food industry for more than fifty years. Many people have told us they would prefer to avoid HFCS, which is why we will continue to move away from using it in new products we launch and explore opportunities to remove it from existing products. More than 95% of the products we offer for retail sale in Canada do not contain high fructose corn syrup.
Do you make any soups, sauces or broths that don’t contain added MSG?
For people looking to avoid MSG, we make around 130 different varieties of soups, sauces and broths that don’t contain added MSG. These include Campbell’s Everyday Gourmet, Campbell’s Ready to Use broths and Campbell’s Great for Cooking Condensed soups. For those who experience food sensitivity reactions to MSG, our products still contain naturally-occurring glutamates which may cause a reaction in sensitive individuals. Ingredients such as mushrooms, tomatoes, parmesan cheese and yeast extract contain naturally-occurring glutamates.
How do I know if my Campbell product contains MSG?
If a Campbell product contains monosodium glutamate (MSG), the ingredient will be listed in our product ingredient statement.
How would I know if MSG is added to this product?
Campbell Company of Canada follows all government regulations regarding the labeling of our products. In the case of MSG, the term of Monosodium Glutamate will be clearly listed in the ingredient statement. If there are ingredients with naturally-occurring glutamate, they will also be labeled by their common name such as autolyzed yeast extract or hydrolyzed plant protein. We do not include any of those items under the broader listings of “spices” or “natural flavours”. We recommend that consumers always check the ingredient statement and evaluate the product based on the statement.
What is High Fructose Corn Syrup or HFCS?
High Fructose Corn Syrup or HFCS is a liquid sweetener, also called Glucose-Fructose on food labels in Canada. High fructose corn syrup contains the same number of calories as table sugar and has been widely used in the food industry for more than fifty years.
What is MSG?
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is the sodium salt of a common amino acid. Monosodium Glutamate occurs naturally in many foods, such as tomatoes and cheeses. It enhances the savoury flavour, and when used in conjunction with salt it creates a clean savoury taste.
Why do you use HFCS in your products?
Although we have significantly reduced our use of the ingredient in recent years, we do use high fructose corn syrup when it is right for the recipe, mostly to help deliver a smoother texture than other sugars can provide, or to keep the cost of a product affordable.
Why use MSG in products?
MSG is lower in sodium compared with table salt (sodium chloride). It contains only 13 percent sodium compared to 39 percent sodium in table salt. This means a small amount of MSG can be used instead of salt to create an appealing savoury flavor. This is particularly useful when making great tasting foods which have reduced sodium and fat.
Can you provide me with allergen information for Campbell products?
We are committed to providing accurate and reliable ingredient statements upon which you can make your purchasing decisions. As ingredients in our products may change, we recommend that you check the label on our products for the most current and accurate ingredient and nutritional information. We follow all government regulation related to allergen labeling.
How does Campbell label the priority allergens?
The Campbell Company of Canada follows all government regulations regarding the labelling of our products. Health Canada has identified 10 substances most frequently associated with food allergies and food sensitivities. The 10 priority food allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, seafood (fish, crustaceans, shellfish), soy, mustard, sesame, sulphites, wheat, and other cereal grains containing gluten (barley, rye, oats and triticale). We list those ingredients in the product ingredient statement. We do not hide those items under the broader listings of “spices” or “natural flavours.” We recommend that consumers always evaluate the product based on the ingredient statement.
How do I remove the label from the can?
Simply soak the can in warm, soapy water for 20 minutes, and the label should peel away easily.
How does Campbell support recycling and/or biodegradable materials?
Like you, we know that the small choices we make, such as the packaging we use, can make a big difference over time. We are working toward a goal of deriving 100 percent of our global packaging materials from sustainable sources – that is, materials that are renewable, recyclable, or contain recycled content – by 2020. Of course, recycling is subject to local guidelines, so we suggest you contact your local authority to confirm that any packaging is acceptable for recycling in your area.
How long can I keep my unopened product in my pantry?
That varies based on the product and the storage conditions. To ensure the best flavor, texture, and overall quality, we recommend using the product before its “Best Before” date, printed on each container. However, if the product is not stored properly, the shelf life will be shortened. To maximize the shelf life, we recommend that you store non-refrigerated items in a cool, dry place where temperatures rarely exceed 21°C
How do you make your soup?
Great question! For many of our soups, it takes just four steps:
- Prepping. We select and prepare the finest ingredients, such as washing, peeling, and dicing vegetables.
- Mixing. We carefully mix ingredients, such as chicken stock, before adding them to the can.
- Cooking. Ingredients are added in a particular order – for example, noodles first, then chicken, broth, and other ingredients – to create the best flavor. We seal the can and cook it at a temperature to make sure the product will remain safe under normal conditions at the grocery store and in your pantry.
- Packaging. We label the finished soup can and box it up before sending it to your grocery store.
Are foods made with GMO ingredients safe?
Yes. We are comfortable using these genetically modified crops because scientists and Health Canada, who have been studying genetic engineering for many years, agree that food ingredients made with these methods are safe and aren’t different from other ingredients. Click here to learn more.
What are GMOs?
GMO is short for “genetically modified organisms.” It is sometimes called genetic engineering and refers to a process where desirable traits or characteristics are introduced into an organism.
Why do we use GMOs?
In Canada, four main GM crops currently grown are canola, soybean, corn and sugar beet. Some farmers choose to use genetically modified seeds and have done so for nearly twenty years because it reduces costs and improves yields. These crops are used to make a wide range of different ingredients that are used in foods we eat every day, ranging from vegetable oils to some sugar. The following list is a comprehensive selection of ingredients that we use that may be derived from crops grown from genetically engineered seeds. These ingredients are NOT used in all products.

Why does the Nutrition Fact Table not show how much added sugar is in the product?
Campbell Canada follows the guidelines provided by Health Canada’s Food and Drugs Act for all of our products. The relevant regulation states that Canadian Nutrition Facts Table must provide the total amount of sugar in a product from all sources rather than a specific line item for “added sugars” as required by U.S. regulation.
